Daily Journal Names James C. Sturdevant to Top 100 ListThe Daily Journal, the West Coast's largest legal publication, named James C. Sturdevant as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California. The list is compiled each year to highlight California's most influential legal practitioners, academics, and judges. By: Daily Journal - Thursday, September 29, 2005
James C. Sturdevant
San Francisco
Place of birth: Salt Lake City
Law school: Boston College Law School
Law firm: The Sturdevant Law Firm
Practice areas: Plaintiffs’ class action, unfair business practice litigation
Recent big case: Filed an amicus brief on behalf of consumers in a case that the state Supreme Court decided in June. The high court found that Discover Bank credit-card-holder agreements that barred class actions and required arbitrations were illegal because they put customers trying to recover small improper charges at a disadvantage.
Most difficult case: A class action against Bank of America in which potential class members could total 1 million elderly and disabled bank customers. A jury in 2004 found that the bank wrongfully withheld Social Security benefits from direct-deposit customers to recover insufficient funds or overdraft fees.
Biggest obstacle: As a law student during the Vietnam War, he told his traditional conservative Republican family that he would apply for conscientious objector status. “Telling my family, particularly my parents, was a very difficult thing to do. I decided that I had to take a stand.”
